Psychotherapy in Petoskey & Northern Michigan

Therapy

Sometimes understanding what's happening isn't enough to change how you're experiencing it.

I offer an integrated approach to psychotherapy that brings together evidence-based clinical practice with mindfulness, nervous-system awareness and mind-body practices, helping you better understand your patterns, strengthen your relationship with yourself and create meaningful change in your life.

In-person in Petoskey, Michigan + online therapy.

Therapy for the places where you feel stuck, overwhelmed or disconnected.

You don't have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy.

You may be navigating a transition, carrying more stress than you realize, repeating patterns in relationships, struggling to set boundaries, or simply noticing that the ways you've always managed life aren't working quite as well anymore.

Therapy creates space to slow down, understand what's happening beneath the surface and develop new ways of responding, not just intellectually, but in the way you experience yourself, your relationships and your everyday life.

What might bring you to therapy?

There isn't one right reason to begin therapy. Sometimes something has happened. Sometimes something keeps happening. And sometimes you simply know you don't want to keep feeling the way you've been feeling.

Stress + Nervous System Regulation

Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, reactive, depleted or unable to fully settle, even when life looks fine from the outside.

Relationships + Communication

People-pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries, recurring relationship patterns, conflict, disconnection or losing yourself in relationships.

Life Change, Loss + Transition

Breakups, grief, career or identity shifts, changing family roles, relocation and seasons of life that leave you wondering what comes next.

Wellness + Joy

Moving beyond simply managing what's difficult toward feeling more connected, present and engaged in your own life.

Therapy that works with the whole person.

Insight matters. But understanding why you feel or behave a certain way doesn't always change what happens in the moment.

My approach integrates evidence-based psychotherapy with mindfulness, nervous-system awareness and embodied practices. Together, we pay attention not only to what you think, but to what you feel, how your body responds, the patterns you've learned and the choices available to you now.

Depending on what serves you, our work may draw from cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, breathwork, meditation, movement and other mind-body practices.

The goal isn't to use every tool. It's to find what helps you understand yourself more clearly, respond more intentionally and create change that carries into everyday life.

Therapy is personal. The relationship matters.

I'm Sarah Cunningham, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Yoga Teacher with more than 20 years of experience supporting people through the complexity of being human.

Over the years, I've learned that meaningful change rarely comes from simply being told what to do. It grows from feeling safe enough to be honest, curious enough to look beneath the surface and supported enough to try something different.

My role isn't to be the expert on your life. It's to bring clinical experience, perspective and practical tools to a relationship in which you remain the expert on you.

I bring both warmth and directness to our work. We'll make room for what's difficult, but therapy with me isn't only about what's wrong. It's also about discovering what matters to you, strengthening what is already working and creating more room for connection, meaning and joy.

What can you expect from therapy with me?

A collaborative relationship

Therapy isn't something I do to you. We'll work together to understand what's happening, identify what matters most and determine where change feels both meaningful and possible.

Insight + practice

We'll explore the patterns beneath what you're experiencing while also developing practical ways to respond differently, in your thoughts, relationships, body and everyday life.

Work that evolves with you

Some seasons call for deeper exploration. Others call for concrete tools, support through a transition or space to reconnect with yourself. Our work can shift as your needs do.
